Quarter, anyone?

The cutest 3 year old kid was brought in after swallowing a quarter. He told me that it did NOT taste very good.

Peds x 2

I’m back at Children’s this block. Even though I am only 3 shifts into the month, I have come to a few conclusions. Everything is so much more fun as an intern! The novelty of everything kid related has worn off and now my overly-staffed shifts are more boring than exciting. There are so many residents on at once that we all end up seeing on average of one patient an hour. My 10 hour shifts drag out forever, actually feeling like 10 hours! The patients are still cute, but that’s not doing much for me this time around. The pathology is just not as interesting to me. Colds and sprains and parental concerns. Where are my strokes and heart attacks and weird infections from IV drug use?!

Secondly, and more importantly, I’ve come to realize that Pediatric Emergency Medicine is not for me. I don’t think I am conservative enough to be a Pediatrician of any sort. Now that I kind of know what I’m doing, kind of sort of, I find myself disagreeing with my attending more often than not. I really like working with certain attendings, but overall, I think Pediatricians just think differently. I feel like a negative nancy for counting down the shifts already, but my favorite part of the day so far is definitely the drive back home to Baltimore.

Maybe it’ll get more interesting. Maybe.
